Two employees with the same 5 LPA CTC may receive different amounts in their bank accounts each month. Under commonly used salary structures in India, the credit may be around ₹36,700 to ₹39,900. The difference largely comes from how much of the package is available as monthly gross pay and how much is allocated to employer-funded contributions or benefits.
As a result, the actual 5 LPA in hand salary is determined by the breakup of the offer rather than the headline package alone. If a larger share of the ₹5 lakh is assigned to components that do not enter the employee’s monthly payroll, the take-home amount falls accordingly.
What Does 5 LPA Mean in an Offer Letter?
LPA stands for lakh per annum, so 5 LPA means ₹5,00,000 a year. Dividing that figure by 12 gives ₹41,667, but this is only the monthly equivalent of the annual amount quoted. It is not automatically the amount that reaches your bank account. The 5 LPA salary per month depends on whether the offer shows total CTC, gross salary or the amount left after employee-side deductions.
| Term | Meaning | Treatment |
| CTC | Total annual employment cost borne by the company | May contain cash and non-cash components |
| Gross salary | Employee earnings before employee-side deductions | Starting point for payslip deductions |
| In-hand salary | Amount remaining after applicable deductions | Amount credited to the bank |
Two offers carrying the same ₹5 lakh headline can therefore produce a different 5 LPA in hand salary when the quoted amount represents a different stage of the salary calculation.
5 LPA Salary Breakup and In-Hand Calculation
For a representative 5 LPA salary breakup, assume annual CTC of ₹5,00,000 and basic salary at 40% of CTC, or ₹2,00,000 a year. Employer PF and employee PF are both taken at 12% of basic salary. EPFO continues to prescribe a standard employee contribution of 12% of basic wages, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, with the employer also contributing at the normal rate.
The example also uses a gratuity provision of about 4.81% of basic salary. The statutory formula for a monthly-rated employee uses 15 days’ wages for each completed year, calculated on a 26-day basis. Professional tax is assumed at ₹2,400 for the year only for illustration. Variable pay is nil, and income-tax TDS is nil under the FY 2026–27 assumptions explained later.
| Component | Annual amount | Monthly equivalent | Cash treatment |
| Total CTC | ₹5,00,000 | ₹41,667 | Employer’s total cost |
| Employer PF | ₹24,000 | ₹2,000 | Removed before arriving at gross cash salary |
| Gratuity provision | Approximately ₹9,620 | Approximately ₹802 | Not paid with the monthly salary |
| Gross cash salary | Approximately ₹4,66,380 | Approximately ₹38,865 | Payslip earnings before employee deductions |
| Employee PF | ₹24,000 | ₹2,000 | Deducted from gross salary |
| Professional tax | ₹2,400 | ₹200 | Deducted where applicable |
| Income-tax TDS | Nil | Nil | Based on stated FY 2026–27 assumptions |
| Estimated in hand | Approximately ₹4,39,980 | Approximately ₹36,665 | Expected bank credit |
In this 5 LPA CTC in hand salary example, employer-side amounts first reduce the portion available as gross cash earnings. Employee PF and professional tax are then taken from gross salary. The resulting 5 LPA in hand salary in India is about ₹36,665 a month under these assumptions.
How the Same 5 LPA Package Can Produce a Different Bank Credit
The same headline package can produce a different 5 lakh salary in hand because companies build compensation differently. Changing the PF basis, keeping employer contributions outside the quoted amount, or placing part of the package in annual benefits changes the regular monthly credit.
| Offer structure | What changes | Likely monthly result |
| Employer PF and gratuity included in CTC | Both amounts reduce monthly cash salary | Around ₹36,700 |
| PF capped at the applicable wage ceiling | Employer and employee PF deductions are lower | Around ₹37,100 |
| ₹5 lakh stated as gross salary | Employer-side benefits sit outside the stated amount | Around ₹39,500–₹39,900 |
| Bonus or insurance included in CTC | Part of the package is unavailable as regular monthly cash | Can fall below the standard range |
EPFO guidance continues to refer to a ₹15,000 statutory wage ceiling and also permits higher-wage contributions in specified cases. When payroll restricts PF to the ceiling, the employer-side amount and employee deduction can both be lower than in the full-basic example.
A 5 LPA in hand salary can rise further when ₹5 lakh is quoted as gross salary because employer-side costs sit outside that figure. It can move the other way when part of CTC is payable only annually or under a separate benefit arrangement. Online calculators differ largely because they begin with different assumptions about these points.
Will You Pay Income Tax on a 5 LPA Salary in FY 2026–27?

The new tax regime allows salaried taxpayers a standard deduction of ₹75,000. Budget 2026 did not change the relevant default individual tax rates for Tax Year 2026–27, and the ₹75,000 standard deduction remains available for salary income under the new regime.
For a resident employee with only the assumed ₹5 lakh salary, the 5 LPA salary after tax would ordinarily carry no final income-tax liability. After the standard deduction, taxable salary remains well within the current rebate framework. Under the Income-tax Act, 2025, a resident individual taxed under the default regime can receive a rebate of up to ₹60,000 when qualifying total income does not exceed ₹12 lakh. PF and professional tax remain separate payroll items, so a nil income-tax result does not remove those deductions.
Other taxable income can change the position. Previous-employer salary, bank interest, taxable capital gains, freelance earnings or similar income may alter TDS for the year. A 5 LPA in hand salary may also look temporarily lower if declarations reach payroll after deductions have begun, even if the final year-end income-tax liability is nil.

How to Check the Exact Salary From Your Offer Letter
To work out your own 5 LPA in hand salary, start with the compensation annexure and follow the figures in sequence:
- Confirm what ₹5 lakh represents. Check whether the offer says fixed CTC or total CTC.
- Separate annual variable pay. Remove incentives and bonuses that are not part of regular monthly payroll.
- Locate employer-side costs. Find employer PF, gratuity, insurance and any other employer-funded amount included in CTC.
- Find annual gross cash salary. Subtract those employer-side costs from the applicable fixed annual figure.
- Convert it to monthly gross. Divide annual gross cash salary by 12.
- Check the employee PF basis. See whether payroll uses full basic pay or the applicable wage ceiling. EPFO continues to recognise the ₹15,000 statutory ceiling alongside permitted higher-wage contributions.
- Apply your state’s professional-tax rule. The levy and amount are not uniform across India.
- Verify payroll TDS. Check whether the employer has calculated any income-tax deduction for the year.
- Ask for an illustrative payslip if needed. A sample calculation can resolve any remaining ambiguity in the annexure.
Conclusion
Online estimates are useful when you need an early sense of an offer, but they cannot replace the compensation annexure. The annexure gives you the figures needed to separate the headline annual package from the amount that actually enters payroll. A dependable 5 LPA in hand salary estimate should therefore begin with your own offer structure and the deductions that apply to your employment.
FAQs
Can my first salary credit be lower than a normal month?
A lower first payment can occur when employment begins after the payroll month has already started. In that case, salary may be calculated only for the days covered from the joining date. Payroll cut-offs and certain one-time joining adjustments may also affect the initial credit, while subsequent full-month salary payments remain unchanged.
Can a salary revision during the year change monthly take-home immediately?
A revision can change the monthly take-home from the date on which the new salary becomes effective. The applicable date is generally mentioned in the appraisal or salary revision letter. Where the revision is approved later, the additional amount may be settled through arrears rather than by altering salary already paid for earlier months.
Do salary arrears appear separately on a payslip?
Many payroll systems show arrears as a separate earning line when an earlier salary period is corrected or revised. The payment can make one month’s bank credit unusually high even though the employee’s regular monthly salary has not changed by the same amount.
Does unpaid leave reduce the salary credited for that month?
Yes. Leave without pay may reduce earnings for that payroll period because the employee is being paid for fewer days on which they were eligible to be paid. The reduction depends on the employer’s payroll-day formula and how many unpaid days are taken.
Why can Form 16 salary be different from the CTC in my offer?
Form 16 reflects salary and tax information relevant to income-tax reporting. CTC represents the employer’s wider annual employment cost. Items included in CTC do not always enter taxable salary in the same form or at the same time.
